What is beauty? How do you like my essay?

This is a short essay I wrote about beauty, how is it? Thoughts? Do you agree or disagree?

What is beauty? Is it the well-dressed, thin, %26quot;perfect%26quot; looking model on the cover of Nylon? Or is it a sparkling blue wave, crashing gently on the sandy shore as the sun sets? How about your two little children that mean the world to you? Or is it just life itself? Maybe it is something that can't be defined, maybe it's something you just have to feel. The meaning of this word, I'm sure, is different for everyone.

I feel that our society has warped the definition of beauty into something unhealthy. In the media, being beautiful is having perfect skin, being skinny, having shiny hair, being tan, etc. All of it is based on looks which are, to most people, unattainable. This is because it is all fake. In real life, these models have zits and pimples and greasy hair days just like the rest of us, but their photos are retouched and airbrushed multiple times to make them seem flawless. These photos are viewed by little girls who look up to them, air brushing and photo shopping and all, as beautiful. If young girls have this idea of what is beautiful in mind, they will try to tweak and change themselves to look a certain way which can lead to eating disorders and self esteem issues by the handful.

So why don't we try to change the perception of beauty to something more real? Why not have a 130 pound woman on the cover of a magazine rather than a 90 pound one? Why don't we leave girls face's close to bare and not caked with makeup (along with airbrush/retouch/photo shop)? Would women not be beautiful this way? I believe every woman is gorgeous, naturally. No matter what skin color, weight, facial features, etc. If we try to instill these messages in our youth, ones that are empowering and encouraging rather than ones that are unrealistic and unattainable, we can help girl's feel more confident in their own skin, but more importantly find their own personal definition of beauty.

I like it, however, it will probably never happen...

The good ol' days were probably the days before mirrors...
What is beauty? How do you like my essay?
Beauty makes me forget I exist, custom makes me think beauty is a set of conditions that it dictates.
